I took a kayaking tour in Milford sound organised by Go Orange.
I stayed at a lodge in Te Anau downs, and it took about 2 hours to get to Milford Sound.
It was raining when I left the lodge, and the weather forecast was for all day rain. Raining is quite common in the Fiordland area. However, the weather cleared up just as I arrived.
There were 8 people in my group and we used 4 tandem kayaks. I sat in the back seat that controls steering. The front seat gives you a better view, but I prefer sitting in the back seat because was fun controlling steering.
After we put on the clothes and equipment for kayaking, we were instructed on paddling and practiced on land how to recover if capsized. Then, we went in the water.
After practicing paddling and steering for a while, we followed our instructor. We went into a creek that was covered by moss on the trees and rocks. There was a mysterious atmosphere.
It was easy paddling on the way to the creak because of a tail wind, but hard on the way back because of head wind.
What I enjoyed about kayaking in Milford Sound were great scenery, smooth water surface and different atmosphere in the same area. Kayaking gives you 360 degree views close to the surface of the water, so that you feel more close to Nature.
Negative side is…..a lot of sand flies.
